Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 July 2026
tandem helps university students find study groups, assignment teams, and classmates in their courses. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it.
What we collect
- University email address — to verify you're a current student and match you to your university. Signup and password resets use a one-time emailed code.
- Password — stored only as a secure hash by our database provider; we never see or store it in plain text. You can also enable two-factor authentication.
- Display name — the name you choose, shown on your posts and in chats.
- Your classes — the courses you select, used to show you relevant posts.
- Content you create — posts, group chat messages, and direct messages.
- Friends — the friend requests you send and accept, used to enable direct messages and private friend groups.
- Crash reports — if the app crashes, technical details about the crash (device model, OS version, and what the app was doing) are sent to Sentry so we can fix it. Crash reports don't include your messages or posts.
We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, or advertising identifiers, and the app contains no third-party analytics or ad tracking.
Where it's stored
Data is stored with Supabase on servers in Sydney, Australia. Access is protected by row-level security: group chat messages and direct messages are only readable by their members, friend groups are private to their members, and your data is only visible to verified students at your own university. If you enable notifications, new-message alerts are delivered through Expo's and Apple's push notification services. Crash reports are processed by Sentry.
What others can see
Your display name, your posts, and the classes a post belongs to are visible to other verified students at your university. Your email address is never shown to other users.
What we share
Nothing. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. We would only disclose information if required by Australian law.
Reporting and blocking
You can report any post or message and block any user from within the app. Reports are reviewed and content that breaks the student code of conduct is removed.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Settings → Delete account. This permanently removes your profile, posts, group memberships, and messages, immediately — there is no waiting period.
